A Letter to the African Diaspora

A Letter to the African Diaspora

To the scattered seeds around the world — it’s time.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Wherever you are — from New York to Nairobi, London to Lagos, Johannesburg to Jamaica — this letter is for you.

Whether you left by choice or were born away from your homeland — this is your heritage.

It doesn’t matter if you send money home monthly or haven’t returned in years — you’re still a thread in the fabric.

We are the African Diaspora — and we are waking up.

You Are Not Alone

You’ve carried dreams across oceans. You’ve built lives in foreign lands. You’ve held jobs below your skill level. You’ve sent money home while barely getting by. You’ve been told “too African” there and “not African enough” at home.

And still… You have survived. You have adapted. You have become.

You Are More Than a Bank Account

Yes, we’ve often been seen as walking remittance machines. Yes, we face the burden of black tax. Yes, we’ve sent money out of guilt instead of strategy.

But we need to change.

  • From affective commitment to intentional contribution
  • From handouts to legacy
  • From giving back to building forward

You were not born just to survive. You were scattered to sow something new — globally.

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

We are separated from one another.

  • Some undocumented.
  • Some thriving.
  • Some silently struggling.
  • Some loud on social media — yet quiet in action.

But we are all part of something greater.

And maybe — just maybe — if we stop judging each other and start building together, We’ll remember what our ancestors knew:

Unity is not uniformity. Unity is shared purpose.

You Are the Bridge

You are the bridge between yesterday and tomorrow. Between the homeland and the world. Between history and healing.

Whether you return or stay abroad, your duty is sacred.

  • You are the builder.
  • The investor.
  • The storyteller.
  • The teacher.
  • The root and the branch.

So, I ask you:

What will your generation be remembered for?

What seed are you sowing — in your homeland, and in your heart?

With All My Hope and Heart

For every sacrifice you’ve made, For each family member you’ve helped, For every part of your identity you’ve navigated…

Thank you. You matter. Your story counts. And the tale continues.

We are not just the diaspora. We are the legacy in motion.

Reflection Prompt

What is your next chapter in this worldwide tale?

And with whom will you share it?
